Hugelkultur is a very old gardening method that involves stacked or buried logs. Its simple and effective. This method, with my own personal touch, has become my personal go to for raised bed gardening. So, lets plant a Victory Garden!
Step One
Lay out your garden bed frame with logs to your desired dimensions.
Step Two
Dig a trench in the middle and place the sod to either side.
Step three
Place old logs, (various hardwood preferred) branches and leaves of various size in the bed and trench and light it on fire!
Put out the fire before the logs are consumed, and place some un-burned logs and sticks in on top of the charred logs and biochar you just made.Â
Step Four
Fill up the bed with lots of dead leaves.
Step Five
Cover the leaves over with compost, old potting soil, and or top soil. Make sure to add a handful of worms! They will love the leaves and logs.
Plant in the spring and watch it grow!
